Age of Weaning and Parasitism in Merino Lambs
نویسنده
چکیده
Merino lambs born in September and October 1964 were weaned at 4, 6 and 11 weeks of age, at average liveweights of 9 kg, 12 kg, and 19 kg respectively, on to a pasture of phalaris and white clover. The lambs remaining with their mothers for 11 weeks showed the earliest onset of an appreciable worm infection which reached a peak in December about one month after weaning. Similar levels of infection were not reached in the other groups until about two months later. It is concluded that weaning at 4 or 6 weeks of age helped to control roundworm infection in the lambs.

The Rafter 7 Merino flock was initiated in Nevada in 1990 with the purchase of 500 purebred Rambouillet ewes. A gradeup program was initiated using Australian Merino genetics with the aim of developing a purebred Merino flock. Early in the project the Rafter 7 Merino line was created, which is approximately 5/8 Merino and 3/8 Rambouillet and has been a closed line since 1999. In a genetic selec...

A study was conducted to evaluate effects of age at weaning on various growth characteristics and stress measures of Zandi lambs. The lambs were weaned at 45 and 90 days of age. The body weights and average daily gain (ADG) were monitored during the experimental period and 5 months of age. Cortisol, glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and lamb behavior (agitation, vocalization) were recorded bef...
متن کاملEffect of weaning age on growth rates of lambs infected by gastrointestinal parasites
Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the most important challenges facing low chemical or organic livestock production systems but also conventional farmers as resistance to anthelmintics becomes more widespread. Young twin-born and reared lambs were challenged for 5 days (Experiment 1) or trickle infected with parasites (Experiment 2) and not weaned (Expt. 1. only) or early (8 and 7 weeks) or...

A trial was carried out to determine the resistance to natural infection by gastrointestinal nematodes in 12 Santa Inês and nine Ile de France lambs before weaning. Faecal samples were obtained for faecal nematode egg counts (FEC). Blood samples were collected to determine packed cell volume (PCV), total plasma protein levels and peripheral eosinophil counts. Most Ile de France lambs (77.8%) we...
